2009 North Carolina Forest Festival Cancelled

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE 2009 FOREST FESTIVAL

The economic crisis which is currently engulfing the entire world has been especially tough on the pulp, paper, and wood products industry. Layoffs, market driven downtime, and a major reduction in spending on equipment and services is very evident in our local economy. These factors have combined to impact the North Carolina Forest Festival scheduled for this May. The bedrock of our Festival is our sponsors. This crisis has rendered most sponsors unable to participate as they had in prior years.

After consideration of many factors and options, the Board of Directors of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce has elected to suspend the North Carolina Forest Festival for the year 2009.

While the Forest Festival will not be held this year, the Chamber of Commerce felt that our community might benefit from some smaller yet entertaining event during that time frame. To that end, on Friday evening, May 1, we will hold a “Roanoke River Beach Party”. This event will feature the Band of Oz and a BBQ dinner consisting of “cooked on site” BBQ chicken, pork, side dishes, homemade desserts, soft drinks, and a beer/wine garden. The location will be near the Port o’ Plymouth Museum………… stay tuned for more details to be announced soon.

We remain optimistic that our economy will improve and that the Forest Festival will return in the spring of 2010. Our sponsors have voiced their sincere appreciation of, and support for the Festival, and the success and growth that has been realized in a few short years. The Washington County Chamber of
